Butyrylcholinesterase(BChE)isaserinehydrolasethatisstructurallysimilartoacetylcholinesterase(AChE),butdiffersinsubstratespecificitiesandinhibitorsensitivities.BChEcan,unlikeAChE,efficientlyhydrolyzelargerestersofcholinesuchasbutyrylcholineandbenzoylcholine.Theenzymeisatetramericglycoproteinwithfourequalsubunits(110kDaeach).TheenzymeisactivatedbyCa2+andMg2+.TheactivityisconstantoverthepHrangeof6.0-8.0.Itisinhibitedbybetaine,nicotine,organophosphates,andcarbamate.
