Alanineisanonessentialaminoacidthatplaysakeyroleintheglucose-alaninecyclebetweenmuscletissueandtheliver.Inaminoacid-degrADIngtissuessuchasmuscle,aminogroupsarepooledasglutamatebytransaminationreactions.Theaminogroupofglutamateistransferredtopyruvateviaalanineaminotransferase,formingalanineandα-ketoglutarate.Thealanineispassedintothebloodandtransportedtotheliver.Thisreactionisreversedintheliverwherepyruvatecanbeusedingluconeogenesistoformglucose,whichmayreturntoothertissuesthroughthecirculatorysystem.Increasedalaninelevelscorrelatewithhigherbloodpressure,energyintake,cholesterollevels,andbodymassindex.
