Acentralnervoussystemstimulantbelievedtoactthroughadenosinereceptorsandmonoamineneurotransmitters.ItisanadenosinereceptorantagoNISTandadenosine3′,5′-cyclicmonophosphate(cAMP)phosphodiesteraseinhibitor.Thus,levelsofcAMPincreaseincellsfollowingtreatmentwithcaffeine.Ithasbeenreportedtoaffectcellularcalciumlevels,releasingcalciumfromintracellularstores.Itoverridesthecellcycleeffectsofvariouschemicalssuchasproteaseinhibitors,preventingapoptosis;andithasbeenshowntoinhibitcellularDNArepairmechanisms.
